Indian Fair & Festival Schedule

Celebrations in India don't just happened they are events awaited throughout the year and careful planning goes into them in terms of participation. The fact that there are scores of such events does not mean any of them is less important than the other. Sometimes a festival or fair takes on different appearances in various part of the country . The result : a colourful mosaic which the visitor may not often fully comprehend, but which offers a thrilling experience on ne's travels. Given below is a list of major festivals and fairs

Holi

Is the most boisterous of all Hindu festivals, observed all over the North. It heralds the end of winter and the beginning of the Spring. The night before the full moon, crowds of people gather together and light huge bonfires to burn the residual dried leaves and twigs of the winter.

Durga Puja

Is performed during the nine days of Navratri. Community pujas in Bengal are organised in every locality. Families visit each other to share feasts. On Bijoya day, the idols are taken in elaborate processions for immersion in the river on the sea.

Deepawali

The festival of lights is one of the most beautiful of Indian festivals. It comes 21 days after Dussehra and celebrates the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after his 14 year exile. Homes are decorted, sweets are distributed by everyone and thousands of lamps lit in houses all over the country making it a night of enchantment.

Dussehra

On Dussehra Sri Ram killed the great demon Ravana, who had abducted Sri Ram's wife Sita to his kingdom of Lanka. Sri Ram was a great believer in the powers of Goddess Durga, and He prayed to her for nine days before He Himself entered the battlefield on the 10th day. It is believed that Ravan had 10 faces. They are probably symbolic of the 10 evil facets of his character. The word Dussehra comes from the word 'Dus' meaning 'Ten' and 'Hara', meaning 'annihilated'. So Dussehra is the day in which the 10 facets of Evil were destroyed. This was the Victory of Truth over Evils.

Maha Kumbh Mela

The Maha Kumbh Mela ("great festival of the pot of nectar of immortality") is held every three years in each of four different locations, returning to each of four places every twelve years. An Ardh (half) Mela (festival) takes place six years after the Maha Kumbh in each location.

Kumbh Mela is a sacred Hindu pilgrimage and bathing festival that takes place at the following 4 locations of India:

- Prayag
- Haridwar
- Ujjain
- Nasik
